A walk on the beach

The record-breaking winter across the U.S. has had everyone scratching their heads. 79.9 inches of total snowfall in Baltimore? Airport closings in Texas? Sleet, hail, and blizzards, oh my! Even though we're used to getting a nice brisk winter in New York, this year's season seems longer than usual. And that has us dreaming of a warm, sunny vacation, and... destination weddings!

Planning a destination wedding has both benefits and challenges. On one hand, you're basically booking a fabulous vacation for you and your family and friends. Who doesn't want an excuse to hop on a plane to Mexico, Jamaica or Italy? And you're already where you need to be for your honeymoon! On the downside, you're probably making decisions based on websites, pictures and phone conversations with people you've never met, and some friends might find it cost-prohibitive to attend.

Although destination weddings take place anywhere in any setting, my thoughts always go straight to the romantic oceanfront. Hawaii continues to be the top choice in the U.S. for casual weddings with more than a third of its ceremonies taking place on the beach.

Joielle has many bridesmaid dress options that would be perfect for a destination wedding. Some would also work beautifully as a wedding dress in white or ivory. Here are a few that have us envisioning the salty breeze whipping through our hair.

Giving the Cold Shoulder

One of the more recent trends to come around in formal wear that I was never too excited about is the one-shoulder gown. I found the assymetry challenging to pull off and risky, and I figured it would go the way of other passing trends like bubble hems and jeweled halter necklines, and I could just wait it out.

But it's not going away! Aside from those like Kate Winslet who have sported the look for years, more celebs are giving the cold shoulder during this year's awards show season, including Marion Cotillard, Mad Men's Christina Hendricks, and 30 Rock's Jane Krakowski.

The truth is, one-shoulder gowns can be quite flattering for a lot of body types, and it shows some skin while still staying conservative. Luckily Dessy has caught on to this, and they have incorporated some beautiful one-shoulder dresses in their new Spring 2010 collection. I'm even tempted to try one of them!
