Real Weddings: Yvonne and Daniel

A wedding that exuded classic tradition and highlighted the best of the bride's hometown, Yvonne and Daniel were married at the Trinity Cathedral Church in Pittsburgh, PA.

The bridesmaids wore After Six Style #6542 in French Blue, a strapless A-line dress in organdy fabric.

Calling herself un-administratively gifted and bad with details, Yvonne freely admits that wedding planning could have been potentially disastrous without the help of her family, and she was very blessed to have their support "emotionally, administratively, and spiritually". Her parents and two younger brothers, who also served as groomsmen, were involved with everything from meeting with vendors, sending out invitations, and ordering the cake.

The wedding day did not go without a hitch. When they arrived at the Grand Concourse restaurant in the historic Pittsburgh train station, Yvonne and Daniel found themselves locked out of the building in the rain! Luckily Yvonne's sister-in-law ran around the building and finally found the reception coordinator to let the newlyweds in.

Avid sports fans, the festivities continued into the evening with a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game after-party. Best wishes, Yvonne and Daniel! We hope the fun and games continue in your new marriage!

Everybody Loves Chocolate

With autumn and winter weddings fast approaching, brides are turning towards richer tones such as purple, dark blue, and garnet. But surprisingly, the color brown is back again! First billed as a non-traditional choice a few years ago, it became apparent that brown was the perfect complement to wedding white, not to mention versatile and chic. Julie's bridesmaid dresses, which she blogged about before, were in Landa's Almond Satin, and I used a dark brown cardstock for my invitations and programs. Like gray, brown can be an alternative to black. It's also a great color if you're trying to incorporate more green-friendly aspects to your decor. And for all of you with a sweet tooth, it's the perfect reason to have a chocolate wedding cake!

There are many different shades in the brown color family to choose from, such as Dessy's Cappuccino or Espresso, Landa's Chocolate, and one of our top selling colors, Alfred Sung's Brownie, which is now available in both Dupioni and Peau de Soie fabrics.

Combine brown with orange, yellow, or other warm hues to evoke nature and the changing colors of autumn.

Another popular wedding color combination is brown and blue. We love the richness and elegance of of this classic pairing.

Real Weddings: Niki and Bill

Today we're happy to share photos from a repeat customer who purchased both her earrings and bridesmaid dresses from us.

Niki and Bill got married this June in Valparaiso, Indiana. She wore the Crystal Drop Earrings by Malis Henderson. Niki confessed that she was a teary bride, which was not what she expected. She started crying when she walked down the aisle with her dad and got the whole crowd choked up too.

We love the strong sense of style and personality that comes through even in the little details. Notice the girls' adorable floral peep-toe heels.

The bridesmaids wore After Six by Dessy's Satin Cap-Sleeved Dress, Style 6552, in Sapphire. Niki said "It was the perfect blue that I wanted for a fun summer wedding". Clearly the bridal party put the real fun in this wedding!

Loving every moment of the wedding, Niki said she and Bill felt like rock stars. Judging from these gorgeous photos, we couldn't agree more. Best wishes to you guys!

Ruffling Your Wardrobe

A few years ago, the ruffle started slipping back into women's clothing. Tired of being simplistic and modern, it was time to go feminine again. The trend is credited to Yves Saint Laurent's Spring 2006 line, and years later, it's still running strong. They're taking over dresses, business tops, jackets and more. Even walking through Banana Republic, almost every top has a little ruffle incorporated somehow around the neckline. We are going ruffle crazy!

Maybe it's too much of a good thing, but there are valid reasons why ruffles have had staying power. First of all, it's a versatile element that's flattering and forgiving for women of all shapes and sizes. There are small ruffles, big ruffles, narrow ruffles, wide ruffles. You can always find a ruffle that works for you. Secondly, it's easy to to dress up a normally plain article of clothing without adding another color or fabric, keeping your outfit subtly stylish and eye-catching at the same time. And finally, ruffles are the perfect blend of girly, sophisticated, vintage, and contemporary.

Here are a few of the ruffly dresses we carry that capture this trend perfectly!
